Remembering Ben Webster, who was born on this day in 1909. Known as one of the “big three” swing tenor saxophonists, he was the first major tenor soloist in the Duke Ellington Orchestra. #nowspinning the inimitable Buffy Sainte-Marie‘s 1969 Vanguard release, ILLUMINATIONS. 🌿✨ Which of Buffy’s records do you have in your collection? Join us on MONDAY, MARCH 27, for a free virtual roundtable event! Artists Amythyst Kiah, Dom Flemons, and Leyla McCalla will be joined by moderator Dr. Bryan Pierce (curator for the National Museum of African American Music) for a virtual conversation about the foundational role Black artists have played in the creation and formation of Roots music. They’ll also discuss their recent contributions to BIRTHRIGHT: A Black Roots Music Compendium — a 40-track compilation that brings listeners on a genre-spanning journey through the rich world of Black Roots music. Sonny Rollins' PLUS 4 was recorded on this day in 1956. Twenty-something-year-old Rollins was a member of the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet at the time, and the other members appear here as sidemen. This legendary group is regarded as one of the greatest pairings in jazz history — as evidenced by such numbers as Rollins’ now-classic waltz “Valse Hot" and his explosively improvisational "Pent-Up House.” On March 22, 1990, the second single from Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine, “Head Like a Hole,” was released. As Rolling Stone noted, the song that kickstarted the Industrial rock movement is “still the anti-anthem for our times.” Announcing seven new titles in the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds series! As we continue to celebrate the prestigious catalog of Lester Koenig’s jazz label Contemporary Records, we’re excited to reissue seven new titles in 2023 (pressed in partnership with our friends at @vinyl_lives): Today we remember jazz pianist Marian McPartland, who was born on this day in 1918. McPartland started out her career performing around Europe for troops during WWII before leading her own trio in the early 1950s. She was an advocate for women in jazz (and even wrote about this issue in DownBeat Magazine) and went on to headline the first Women’s Jazz Festival in 1978. Happy #Spring! 🌼🌷🎶 Anyone else spinning @billevansofficial’s 1981 album YOU MUST BELIEVE IN SPRING in honor of the new season ahead? Which track is your favorite? Collective Soul’s debut single “Shine” was released 30 years ago today on March 19, 1993! The track was the lead single off the band’s first album, HINTS, ALLEGATIONS AND THINGS LEFT UNSAID, and eventually topped Billboard’s “Album Rock Tracks” chart for eight weeks.
